Bristol South, Karin Smyth

Karin has lived in Bristol for 20 years is married and a mother to 3 boys aged 14, 11 and 9. She was born in London in 1964 to Irish immigrant parents, who had come to England a decade earlier, and lived in Hillingdon most of her childhood. She attended Bishopshalt School, Uxbridge Technical College and then the University of East Anglia to study Economic and Social Studies. Karin joined the Labour Party at University, in 1985, because of the injustice she felt that more women like her were not there.

It was also at University that she became interested in health and health inequalities which led her to join the NHS as a manager in 1988. Karin gained an MBA from the University of Bath in 1995 and having left the NHS, set up the office of Valerie Davey MP in Bristol West in 1997 as well as becoming her Election Agent. Karin served as a Non-Executive Director of a Bristol NHS Primary Care Trust 2002– 6 whilst being at home raising her young children. She also served as a school governor of a Bristol secondary school and Nursery School & Children’s Centre. Karin returned to work for the NHS in 2008 and currently works for the Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group.
