Ibrahim Taguri grew up in Willesden Green, Brent. Over the last 15 years, Ibrahim has worked for several London-based charities in campaigning and fundraising capacities and most recently for the Liberal Democrats.

In undertaking these roles, Ibrahim has led campaigns for charities providing kids from underprivileged backgrounds with better educational opportunities – a cause he passionately believes in. He also spent several years working in the hospice movement and managed the multi-million pound fundraising campaign to build the world’s most advanced hospice in-patient centre in south London.

Ibrahim’s commitment to social mobility is borne out of his own personal experiences as a first generation working class Muslim immigrant growing up on a council estate. He was fortunate enough to be one of the last pupils to benefit from the Assisted Places Scheme at Latymer Upper School, before it was abolished by Labour in 1997. He then went on to study English Literature and Language at the University of Reading.

Selected in December 2013 to succeed Sarah Teather MP in his home town seat of Brent Central, Ibrahim has put the local community and activists at the heart of his campaign to re-open closed libraries, support local business, fight crime, and clean up the streets neglected by Labour-run Brent Council.

Having grown up in Brent Ibrahim understands the challenges faced by many in the community, having been through the same issues himself. This is why he was inspired and motivated to stand for election there. Ibrahim says, “Brent is my home and a place I love dearly. It is such a diverse, peaceful and enterprising community that represents the very best of London. The people here share a common sense of values, ideals and aspirations. That for me is the true sense of community.”

On a national level, Ibrahim is committed to increasing parents’ access to affordable childcare, improving educational standards and fighting poverty through radical tax reform to ensure that the lowest earning in society are taken out of paying tax altogether. He is also a keen defender of civil liberties, both at home and abroad.

As a Liberal Democrat, Ibrahim is most proud of the Party’s record on raising the tax threshold, the pupil premium, ending child detention and its stance on international issues such as the on-going plight of Palestinians.

Away from politics, Ibrahim is a keen athlete who took up boxing in his early twenties and went on to have his debut fight in front of an 800 strong crowd at the spiritual home of British boxing, the York Hall, Bethnal Green. He has since gone on to remain undefeated with a perfect three out of three record. Despite his last fight being in 2008, Ibrahim has never formally announced his retirement from the sport. He is also a huge fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC and a regular at White Hart Lane.
