Amber Valley, Kevin Gillott

Kevin Gillott is the Deputy Leader of Derbyshire County Council with responsibility for children's services having been a local councillor since 1997. Married with a teenage son, Kevin lives in North Wingfield.

A Derbyshire resident for over 40 years, he grew up in Dronfield where he was educated at the local Henry Fanshaw Comprehensive School. After graduating from university in 1984 he started work as an administrative assistant in the Derbyshire Magistrate's Courts Service but went back to university whilst still working to qualify as a solicitor. He continued to work in the court service as a senior legal adviser for over 20 years until he took on his current role as Deputy Leader.

Kevin has a strong record as an active campaigner and as someone who works hard for the people he represents. He already had strong links with Amber Valley before he was selected as the candidate by local Party Members. Since his selection he's been active in the constituency on a range of issues including opposing the proposals to close local fire stations as a consequence of government cuts, working with the local health authorities to ensure the reopening of Heanor Hospital and working with Labour councillors to oppose some of the planning proposals in the constituency.

Kevin is a passionate believer in the importance of early years education and in the need to work with schools to ensure every child gets the best education. As the Cabinet Member for Children's Service's he's supported proposals to introduce school breakfast clubs, tackle youth unemployment and introduce the living wage. He's also a strong supporter of greater devolution of powers from central to local government and of the need to rebuild trust in politics.
