ANDREW TURNER
MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR ISLE OF WIGHT

Andrew was born in 1953 in Coventry and educated at Rugby, Keble College Oxford (BA, MA Geography), Birmingham University and Henley Management Collgee. He and Carole have recently moved from Cowes to Newport; he lists his interests as the countryside, old movies and avoiding gardening.

Andrew trained as a teacher at Birmingham University and taught economics in comprehensive schools for several years. He worked on education policy at the Conservative Research department and was subsequently Special Advisor to Ministers at the Department of Health and Social Security.

From 1988 to1997, he ran the Grant Maintained Schools Foundation and subsequently acted as an education consultant with clients as varied as the Girls' Day School Trust, Edison (an American education company) and the London Borough of Southwark.

Since his election to Parliament in 2001 Andrew has worked tirelessly for the Islanders both at home and at Westminster.

In addition, in November 2001 Andrew was elected to the executive of the 1922 Committee of the Conservative Party.From 2003 to 2005 Andrew served as Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party; he has also been the Shadow Minister for Charities.

Before being elected to Parliament, Andrew served as a city councillor for 17 years, taking an especial interest in housing and highways. He contested Hackney South and Shoreditch in 1992 and Birmingham East in the 1994 European elections. In 1997 he narrowly failed to win the Isle of Wight but in the June 2001 General Election he won the seat with a majority of nearly 3,000. His particular political interests include education, local government, social services and the constitution.
