Cambridge, Daniel Zeichner

Daniel Zeichner is Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for Cambridge. Daniel works for national trade union UNISON campaigning on behalf of low-paid workers, mainly women working in public services like the NHS. He lives in Cambridge in Victoria Road with his partner Barbara (known as ‘Budge’), very close to where they lived when they met as students at King’s College. Daniel started his working life in IT at Shire Hall before going on to work for a range of major UK companies including Philips on the old Simoco site in East Chesterton and Perkins Engines in Peterborough.

Daniel was Labour’s candidate in Cambridge in 2010 and has worked with campaigners on a series of high-profile issues in the city. With Labour councillors, he campaigned against Liberal Democrat proposals to build homes on Cambridge Airport without proper transport links which would have forced major employer Marshall out of the city. He has been a leading voice against privatisation of local health services, and is leading campaigns to make Cambridge a Living Wage City. He has strongly opposed the Bedroom Tax and Gagging Bill – unlike the incumbent Liberal Democrat MP.

Daniel was a councillor for eight years and was chair of a school governing body for seven years. He has been a trustee of a carers organisation in Cambridge. He is a keen environmentalist and is an executive member of Labour’s national environmental campaigning group. He is a constitutional reformer, and runs a Labour group campaigning to reform the House of Lords.

Outside politics Daniel is a keen sportsman, he enjoys cycling and walking and was a promising middle-distance runner in his youth. He is a lifelong and long-suffering Crystal Palace supporter, but is increasingly enthused by Cambridge United! With his partner Budge, he used to run a small garden nursery and they appreciate gardens and the countryside. He also enjoys music, particularly at Kettles Yard.
