Brent Central, Dawn Butler

Dawn was born in London and lives in Tokyngton near Wembley in Brent. She works as a training consultant, advising a range of public and private sector clients and was formerly an officer of the GMB trade union.

Dawn is a trustee for Willesden Citizens Advice Bureau in Brent, where she has been alarmed to see the number of people seeking debt advice sky-rocket over the last four years, a sure sign of the impact of the Coalition Government’s cuts. She also sits regularly as a magistrate, an experience which has brought her face to face with the impact of legal aid and probation cuts, both of which she is determined to tackle on the national stage if elected in 2015.

Dawn was MP for Brent South under the 2005-2010 Government, being only the third African-Caribbean woman to become a British MP. She rose quickly to be Minister for Youth Engagement, following her passion for involving young people in decision-making – she had already been a pioneering force behind Brent’s Youth Parliament, which sees young people from across the borough sit alongside local councillors as they make critical policy and financial decisions.

If elected Dawn will do her best to ensure that basic quality of life issues for people in Brent are pushed hard in Parliament, from affordable housing, to energy prices and investment in our local high streets. Dawn is devoted to Brent and determined to win another opportunity to represent its people.
